Difference between "instrument" and "preset"

The physical model contains a great number of parameters, but only a small part of them are available through the user interface. When only the user interface parameters are changed, then we say that it is still the same instrument but a different preset. Hence presets are understood as variations of a given instrument.

For example, C3 player and C3 ambience are both the same instrument, because the difference lies in the microphone position which can be defined by the user himself. On the contrary, C3 player and M3 player are two different instruments because it is impossible to obtain M3 player by modifying the user interface parameters of the C3 player.

Here is a list of all instruments available in PIANOTEQ 3.
